Costume design, sculpture, dance, performance art all come together in his work, which is purely art in progress because it doesn’t end with the making of the costumes.
The costumes become alive visually and auditorily through movement, hence they live through performance.

plenty of ‘candy’ in the coming season in the accessories department to appease the whims of even the most insatiable fashion appetite. even when it just is eye candy it tastes sweet!

this season is the apotheosis of accessories! so far I’ve selected my favourite handbags and shoes:

extra comments on spring/summer 2010 collections

there are a few more things worth commenting on the collections I’ve seen:

1. CRAZY HAIRDOS: loads of them on the runways. they’re fun (hilarious sometimes), creative, bold. often a plus, sometimes a disaster. I’ve selected the crazier ones.

2. THE “JUNKIE WITCH” LOOK: what was John Galliano thinking when he approved this look? must admit that it works with the collection, but the question still stands!

3. this is something I’ve been trying to figure out for a long time: what’s wrong with Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana?

their creations for women scream sexy, confident, powerful, daring, on top of the world. so, why on earth do they pick the sickest looking models to wear them on the catwalk? seriously, there’s a contradiction here. the image expressed by their clothes is in total antithesis to the way these women look: sick, underdeveloped, hungry creatures with some wicked disease!

well, I have a theory but it’s quite cinical so I’ll keep it to myself for now!

excited by spring approaching and curious to know what designers are proposing for the warm season, pushed by the desire of being inspired, I’ve been nosing around, checking out some of the ready-to-wear collections shown recently.

I’ve seen loads of nice items, things I’d wear, things I’d like to see being worn down the street, not very convincing things and defenite no-nos!

The Heidelberg Project brings color to the suburbs of Detroit. Artist Tyree Guyton has transformed his block in a wonderland to keep the kids off the street and to raise cultural awareness.

Hat off to this man’s work!

the ‘ultra limited shoe’ campaign

A Gucci article is already to be considered a special item, especially when produced in limited edition. but the creative genius of Frida Giannini gave birth to something quite out of the box. she hired Mark Ronson to design trainers for Gucci – great idea as music and fashion often go together hand in hand – and so far, nothing too special. The real edge to this project, called “The Gucci Icon Temporary Initiative” is that the shoe is sold in “itinerant” shops, so when the shop – now in Miami- moves to the next city, whoever missed it and badly wants the shoe has to travel to the next location to get it.

isn’t this the coolest idea to make the item even more ‘limited’?

No chance for Mark’s trainer to end up like a “spasmodica”!

oi oi, seems like the Italian fashion industry is suffering this year. The crisis is hitting hard on the rich fashion houses, too, besides the fact that most collections are produced by cheap labour far far away from home.

The result, as seen at Milan Menswear Week, is an over whole tendency at playing safe and not pushing any particular trend but folding back to an easy-to-please, always a winner casual chic style (except for Cavalli, who’s experiencing a Glam blast from the past, and D&G, who’s celebration of old Sicily has left many of their models in underwear on the runaway!), even if it looks like previous years’ collections.

I reckon the best approach to the “crisis” is to take it with irony and have fun, like Vivienne Westwood: no better time to adopt the ‘tramp’ look!

Lady Gaga: spot the reference

what I really like about Lady Gaga’s videos is that there are always elements that remind me of other artists of the past. besides being very glam rock in style in general, take the video of ‘beautiful, dirty, rich’: the range of jackets she wears…totally Ziggy Stardust!

when I watched ‘love game’ I immediatly thought of Freddy Mercury, Charlotte Rampling in The Nightporter and Janette Jackson in Rhythm Nation. also reminded me of Jamie Lee Curtis’ high cut gym outfits in ‘Perfect’ (does anyone remember that movie?).

In ‘just dance’ she looks like David Bowie meet Debbie Harris.

In ‘Paparazzi’ the body tight all-in-one she wears, again, is very Freddy meet Ziggy.

and what about the fetish for shades? something to share with Chris Lowe of Pet Shop Boys.

is a hugely talented illustrator from Lyon. I love his watercolour technique, in its ‘false’ semplicity it reminds me of Hugo Pratt.

his latest work is a short animated film made in memory of sophie lancaster – ‘dark angel’ – to promote a message of tolerance. sountrack provided by Portishead. those of you who followed the story of sophie: have a hankerchief at hand, it makes quite an impact!
